More of your buyers now start with a question typed into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google’s AI Overviews. They ask something like “who is a good brand strategist for a small consulting firm” and get a short answer with a few names in it.
If your business is one of those names, you are on a shortlist before anyone has visited your website. If it is missing, you never knew the conversation happened.
People call the work of getting into those answers AI search visibility, or answer engine optimization. The labels change every few months. The work underneath stays fairly steady, and most of it is good marketing you should be doing anyway. This guide covers how to appear in ChatGPT answers, and in the other assistants your buyers use.
How ChatGPT decides who to mention
There is no ranked list inside ChatGPT the way there is on a Google results page. When someone asks a question, the assistant writes an answer from two places: what it learned during training, and, when it searches the web, the pages it finds for that question.
In both cases it is looking for businesses that are described clearly and consistently across many sources. If your website says one thing and nobody else mentions you at all, the assistant has very little to go on. If several independent sources describe you the same way, you become a safe name to include.
So “ranking” in ChatGPT comes down to two things you can influence. Your own pages need to state plainly who you are and who you help. Other people need to be saying it too.
Check where you stand today
Before you change anything, find out what the assistants already say.
Write down 10 questions a buyer might ask when they are looking for what you sell. Use their words, and include the kind of person they are. For example, “best PR consultant for a women-owned skincare brand” is closer to a real prompt than “PR consultant”.
Ask each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google. Note whether you appear, and which websites the answers cite. Save the answers, because you will want to compare them in a month.
Tools like Semrush and Ubersuggest can now track this for you across a set of prompts. A spreadsheet works fine to begin with.
The cited sources are the most useful part. They show you exactly which publications and directories the assistants trust in your field.
Make your website easy to understand
AI crawlers read your site the way a very literal new employee would. Help them.
- Say what you do and who it is for in plain words near the top of your homepage. A clever tagline with no explanation leaves the machine guessing.
- Give each service its own page, with a clear heading that names the service.
- Add a frequently asked questions section that answers the questions from your list above in two or three sentences each.
- Use structured data (schema markup) for your business, your services, and your FAQs, so the facts are labeled.
- Check your robots.txt file. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, or Googlebot, those assistants cannot read your pages when they search.
Because ChatGPT’s web search has relied in part on Bing, it is also worth verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting your sitemap there. It takes 10 minutes and many businesses skip it.
I saw this happen with OrangeBag, a commercial laundry company. Semrush tracks how often AI assistants name a business when people ask about its industry, and OrangeBag started at 16%. After I rebuilt the site with one clear page for every service and market, plus a short plain-language answer at the top of the homepage, that figure reached 49.73% within two weeks.
How to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT
This is the part that moves the needle most, and the part most people skip, because it takes longer than editing a web page.
Look at the sources that came up in your checks and work out how to appear in them. Depending on your field, that might mean:
- Press coverage and interviews in trade publications.
- Podcast guest spots, which leave a transcript and show notes behind.
- Industry directories and “best of” lists.
- Reviews on Google and on the platforms your buyers use.
- Answers and posts on LinkedIn and Reddit, where people ask for recommendations.
Keep your description consistent everywhere. Use the same business name and the same short line about what you do. Consistency is how an assistant becomes confident that all these mentions are about the same business.
Write the content people ask about
Assistants answer questions, so publish answers. The pages that tend to get pulled into AI responses are the ones that answer a specific question well, such as:
- Comparisons (“brand strategist or marketing agency?”).
- Explanations of what something costs and why.
- Guides for a specific type of customer.
- Your own data or observations that nobody else has.
Put the direct answer in the first paragraph, then add the detail. Long introductions before the answer make a page harder to quote.
What does not work
Stuffing your pages with the phrase “best in the industry” does nothing. Neither does creating dozens of thin pages that say the same thing with a different city name. Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed placement in ChatGPT. Nobody can promise what an assistant will say, and the tactics sold as shortcuts tend to stop working quickly.
How long it takes
Changes to your own site can show up within weeks for assistants that search the web live. Changes that depend on new mentions elsewhere take longer, usually a few months, because the coverage has to exist before anything can cite it.
Re-run your 10 questions every month. Track how often you appear and which sources get cited, and you will see which efforts are paying off.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI search visibility different from SEO?
They overlap heavily. A site that is clear, fast, well structured, and well linked does better in both. AI search puts more weight on what other sources say about you, so press and reviews matter even more than they do for ordinary search rankings.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. Any advertising sits apart from the answer, and the recommendation inside the answer cannot be bought. It comes from how the assistant understands your business from the sources it can see.
How do I know which prompts to track?
Use the questions your real clients asked before they hired you. Your sales calls and inquiry emails are the best source. Add the type of customer to each prompt, because assistants give different answers for different audiences.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants and search features to understand and recommend. It covers your own website and your reputation on other sites.
