How to Become a Thought Leader

To become a thought leader, choose a narrow subject you know from real work, form a clear opinion about it, and publish that opinion where your buyers already pay attention. Then take the same ideas to other people’s audiences through podcasts, press, and speaking, which for most founders and consultants takes a year or more of steady effort.

What is a thought leader, and what is thought leadership?

A thought leader is a person known for a distinct and useful point of view on one subject, so clients and journalists think of them first when it comes up. You become a recognized thought leader only when other people give you the title, so calling yourself one in your bio tends to work against you.

Thought leadership is the work behind the reputation, meaning any essay, talk, interview, or post where you share an informed opinion on a question your target audience cares about. The best thought leadership content changes how readers see a problem, and it draws so closely on your own experience that a competitor could not have written it.

When a business uses this kind of content to attract clients, it is called thought leadership marketing, which is one form of content marketing. For a founder or consultant, the business and the thought leader are usually the same person, so your published ideas do much of your marketing.

In writing, “thought leader” is two words with no hyphen.

How a thought leader differs from an expert or an influencer

An expert knows the answer when someone asks, while a thought leader has already said in public what they think and why.

Influencers usually build an audience on social media first and then decide what to talk about. A thought leader starts from an area of expertise and builds an audience around it, so a consultant whose 2,000 followers are the right buyers can win more business than an influencer with far more followers.

Step 1: Pick a narrow point of view

My guide to personal branding for female entrepreneurs covers choosing the one topic you want to be known for, and every thought leadership strategy adds an opinion about that topic that people can agree or disagree with.

A topic is “cash flow for small agencies,” while a point of view is “Small agencies run short of cash because they bill at the end of the month, and every client should pay a retainer up front.” The first describes a subject, and the second gives a reader something to argue with and share.

To find yours, list the common advice in your field that you disagree with and the mistakes you watch clients repeat, then pick the one you could defend in front of a skeptical room with examples from your own work.

Step 2: Publish your opinions consistently

A point of view becomes a reputation only when people see it again and again, so choose a publishing rhythm you can keep for at least a year. One substantial piece a week is plenty for most founders, whether you write blog posts or long LinkedIn posts, and because content creation takes time, pick a pace at which every piece can stay high quality.

Each piece should argue one idea and back it with evidence from the real world that only you could know, such as a client situation you can describe anonymously. An opinion without evidence reads as noise, while evidence without an opinion reads as a report.

Step 3: Choose your platforms

You need a home base you own, such as a website or newsletter that search engines and AI assistants can read and no algorithm can take away, plus a place where new people can discover you.

For founders and consultants who sell to other businesses, that place is usually LinkedIn, although Instagram or YouTube may matter more if you sell to consumers. To become a thought leader on LinkedIn, put your point of view in your headline and About section, publish on a fixed schedule, and comment thoughtfully on posts by business leaders your buyers follow.

Step 4: Get on other people’s stages

Your own channels build depth with people who already follow you, while each appearance on someone else’s stage reaches new people and establishes credibility through the host.

Podcasts are the easiest place to begin, because hosts need new guests every week. Pitch shows your buyers listen to with one episode idea drawn from your point of view, since a show with 500 devoted listeners in your niche can be worth more than a general business show.

Journalists look for a trusted source who can explain what a trend means and who holds a clear opinion about it, which your point of view gives them, and I cover finding and pitching reporters in how to get press coverage.

Speaking engagements take longer to set up, but they build trust quickly because a room gets to watch you think in real time. Start with webinars and local business groups, then use those recordings to pitch conference talks with a title that states your opinion.

I saw this with a founder in the games industry I began working with in 2020. We built his thought leadership on LinkedIn, where his network grew from 5,000 to 26,000, and then put him on other people’s stages through podcasts and panels. His next Kickstarter raised $6.7 million, and the partnerships that followed included Hello Kitty and Disney.

Step 5: Measure it

Thought leadership is slow, so track a few signals once a month to see whether it is working before the revenue arrives:

• Inbound inquiries that mention something you wrote or said.
• Invitations to speak or to appear on podcasts.
• Prospects who repeat your phrases or ideas back to you on calls.
• Searches for your name, which Google Search Console shows for your website.
• Whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI assistants mention you when asked about your subject.

Likes and follower counts matter least, because they measure reach while a thought leader is judged by who is paying attention, so ask every new client how they first heard of you.

Examples of thought leadership formats

Thought leadership examples come in many shapes, and the best content strategies use one or two formats that suit the way you think:

• Opinion essays that take a clear position on a question in your field.
• Original research, such as a client survey, published as a short report.
• A named framework that explains, step by step, how you approach a common problem.
• A newsletter that says what the news in your industry means for your readers.
• Case study breakdowns of a real problem, anonymized or shared with permission.
• A podcast or video series you host.
• Bylined articles in trade publications, which lend you the publication’s authority.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Summarizing other people’s ideas, which can be valuable content but gives readers no reason to remember you.
• Staying so broad that your posts could have come from anyone in your industry.
• Avoiding every opinion someone might disagree with, since nobody remembers content nobody could object to.
• Selling in every post, when most of your content should help people whether or not they hire you.
• Quitting after three months, which is usually just before people start to notice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make money as a thought leader?

Most thought leaders make their money indirectly, because their ideas bring in clients for their consulting or coaching business. Some add paid speaking, workshops, courses, advisory roles, or books once people know their name.

How do I become a thought leader on LinkedIn?

Put your point of view in your headline and About section, publish one substantial post a week, and comment on posts by people your buyers follow for at least six months before you judge the results.

Can I be a thought leader without a big following?

Yes, because being a thought leader in your industry depends on who is listening more than how many. A few thousand followers who include the right buyers will do more for you than a large general audience.

How long does it take to become a thought leader?

Most founders and consultants need a year or more of weekly publishing, although podcasts, press, and speaking can shorten that because each appearance borrows the trust an audience has in the host.

Should I hire someone to help me become a thought leader?

You can do most of this yourself, since the ideas have to be yours either way. Outside help is most useful for sharpening your point of view and for getting booked on podcasts, in the press, and on stages.
